Dump your Christmas tree and keep it, too!

You can bring your Christmas tree to 34th Ave. in front of Travers ParkThe NYC Department of Parks

& Recreation will chip your tree, and give you your very own bag of mulch! Or, if you do not want it, the mulch will be used around the city, perhaps even right here in Jackson Heights.

Please remove all decorations and lights.

If this program is anything like those in the past, there will be refreshments and 34th Ave. will smell like you are deep in some piney woods.

You can dispose of your Christmas tree and keep it, too, by participating in NYC Parks’ annual TreeCycle/Mulchfest set for Travers Park on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 10 and 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bring your live tree, wreathes or garlands to the event – after you’ve removed lights, tinsel and decorations – and you can take home a bag of mulch made by chipping Jackson Heights’ natural holiday decorations. Then place the mulch around your street tree or garden perennials and shrubs. Travers Park is located at 34th Avenue and 78th Street. JHBG volunteers will be at the event so stop by and say hello.

JHBG could use help at this Saturday and Sunday’s Mulchfest. The events start at 10 a.m. and run to 2 p.m.
Volunteers also are needed at 2 p.m. for about an hour or so to unload mulch outside our compost center, JHScraps, into the facility. Upper body strength is a BIG HELP for this work. Saturday November 22, from 10 AM – 1 PM‎ we did our last Saturday morning gardening. Our focus was on getting everything ready for winter. We met at 35th Avenue and 69th Street our composting center.

We have had a busy year working every Saturday since our frigid tree give-a-way on March 1st. We have cleared out a new garden space on 34th Avenue and 69th Street

(across from the old White Castle Office) and planted over 1,400 tulips bulbs

we re-did the garden at PS 280 putting in 5 raised planting beds.

We saw the re-planted tulip garden at 37th and 69th Street spring to life and planted 3,000 more tulips along 69th Street

at PS 149,

and our garden at Junction and 34th Avenue.

We also planted about 4,000 new daffodil bulbs around Jackson Heights.

You will have something to look forward to during the cold winter.

We installed and planted 9 new and expensive iron tree surrounds on 37th Avenue with the help of 2 grants

we made and painted over 20 wooden tree surrounds on 94th and 95th Streets between 35th and 37th Avenue.

With the help of Moma-PS1 who donated plants, we started to fill in our garden at 34th Avenue and Junction Blvd.

We continue to work on cleaning out Leverich cemetery.

Again with the help from Moma-PS1 we added soil along 69th Street so that planting can be done (near driveway to train tracks) next Spring!

We also did a lot of weeding, watering, trash removal and tending to our public green spaces in Jackson Heights.

With the hard work of our full time gardener and volunteer Rafael Rodriguez we have been able to maintain all these gardens.

With the artistic eye of Rodrigo Salazar we have been able to document the changes.‎(check out all the pictures on facebook).

We have had an enormous number of volunteers‎ and we could not keep up all of our spaces without them.

We now take care of or help at:

– garden at Junction and ‎34th Avenue at the end of the Food Bazaar parking lot;

– garden on 69th Street where we have a fenced tulip garden and 2 bee hives at 37th Avenue, a new planting space for the Spring and our oldest garden (now 5 years old) in the middle of the block with bushes, a strawberry patch and an herb garden just before the JH Scraps composting center.

– on the next block is the JHBG dog run

– now on the corner of 34th Avenue and 69th Street we have a large fenced garden area which has a tulip garden planted for the spring;

– we have planted daffodils along the median of 34th Avenue;

– we have cleaned the Post Office garden;

– worked on the tree pits along 37th Avenue;

– done the garden at PS 280 and PS 149;

– worked on tree surrounds on 94th and 95th Streets…

Next year we hope to re-do the garden around PS 69, but we are waiting on funding.

Before winter sets in, we need to clean out the leaves and plants bulbs in our garden next to food Bazaar. On November 22nd we will be picking up the leaves and cleaning out the garden beds.

11/15/14 – Leaf clean up at Tulip garden at 37th Ave. and 69th St.
After we established the garden in the middle of the block, we noticed that NY State Department of Transportation who owns the land around the BQE had actually planted a tulip garden behind the tall iron fence at the corner between 69th Street and the entrance ramp to the BQE. Unfortunately, over time the area became overgrown. Last spring with the help of our gardener, Rafael, we replanted the tulips and a have planted summer flowers. Our goal is to make the garden more robust with plants that bloom year round. It is also the home to JH own bee hive. If you are a garden planer, this is the project for you. On November 15th we will be cleaning out the leaves and planting bulbs.

With the cooperation of NYS Department of Transportation, we are expanding our green zone along 69th Street, by opening access to the north-west corner of 34th Avenue and 69th Street. With the new garden, our green zone will start with the Tulip garden at 37th Avenue, followed by the garden in the middle of the block which is next to JH Scraps. Next JHBG has the big and small dog run. The next step is the area across the street from the White Castle Office. This is an area that boarders the BQE and has been landscaped by the NYS Dept. of transportation, but over time it has become overgrown. Again we are looking for people with vision for this space. I see it as a fabulous vertical garden. On October 25th, we will take the first step–pulling the weeds and create ideas for spring planting.

Fruit Trees planted

Mint Planted: It is a perennial with very fragrant, toothed leaves and tiny purple, pink, or white flowers. It has a fruity, aromatic taste. The mint family has many varieties, but it will take over your garden, so be careful where you plant it.

10/31/14 (Friday) – JHBG Halloween Parade along 37th Ave. from 89th St. to 77th St. line up at 4:30 PM

– Leverich Cemetery Part III – clean out trash and mulch tree limbs
The Leverich family owned much of the original land that is now Jackson Heights dating back to around 1670. The family had a small family cemetery. There are no headstones, but it is a small, quiet green space with great potential. JHBG has been working with the descendants of the Leverich Family and wants to work with City Parks Department to see the space transformed from a dumping ground to a manicured sacred space. In 2002, JHBG helped clean out the space, but over time the garbage piled up. Last spring we cleared out a mountain of trash and weeds and cut up fallen trees. This fall there is a mountain of tree limbs to mulch and smaller debris to remove. It has been a slow process, but the first step is to remove the trash, so people can see the space’s potential.

11/1/14 – PS 149 at 34th and 93rd St. – Daffodil bulb planting
The Daffodil Project was founded in 2001 as a living memorial to September 11. New Yorker’s for Parks distributes free bulbs to civic organizations, such as JHBG to be planted in tree pits, medians, school yards or other green spaces. JHBG has participated for over 5 years and each spring the over 10,000 daffodil planted are the announcement that spring has sprung. On November 1st we will be planting the bulbs around PS 149.

11/8/14 – Bulb planting and leaf cleaning 69th St. & 35th Ave.
The garden along 69th Street next to JH Scraps, our composting center, is our first JHBG community garden. It was started as an effort 6 years ago to stop the dumping along 69th Street which boarders the east side of the BQE. We found that soon after we hauled away trash, the trash returned. Our vision was to transform the space into a beautiful garden, so people would not dump their trash. It has been a success. There is still trash, but not all out dumping. Also, in a neighborhood with so little public green space, JHBG is committed to utilize every green space available. On November 8th we will be planting bulbs and cleaning up leaves.
