JHBG CELEBRATES TWENTY-FIFTH ANNUAL
“HISTORIC JACKSON HEIGHTS WEEKEND”
For the last 25 years the Jackson Heights Beautification Group (JHBG) has sponsored events to celebrate Jackson Heights and the unique role it has played in urban planning history. These events are a must-see for people interested in historic preservation, innovative planned “Garden” communities, and diverse New York neighborhoods with a true sense of place. To kick off the Historic Weekend, JHBG is holding an art competition for schools in the neighborhood. The application is available here JHBGartapplication2015, and it should be completed and sent to BEAUDOIN REALTY GROUP, 78-27 37th AVE, suite 5, 2nd floor by May 22nd.
June 13th – Garden Tour
On Saturday June 13th the “Historic Weekend” begins at the Community United Methodist Church at 81-10 35th Avenue with an exhibition of vintage photographs and memorabilia of Jackson Heights. A slide presentation covering the history of Jackson Heights will be given in the late morning and early afternoon. A self-guided Garden Tour, also scheduled for Saturday, allows participants to visit at least fifteen private gardens while also viewing numerous others from the street. These block-long, park-like gardens are unique to Jackson Heights, and are only open to the public one day each year.
- Slide lectures at 10:45am and 12:15pm at the Community Church, 81-10 35th Avenue. Rain or Shine: FREE
- Garden Tour from 12 noon to 4:00pm; $10 Tickets can be purchased at Community Church beginning at 10am (Raindate: June 20th)
June 14th – Walking Tour
On Sunday June 14th at noon, escorted Walking Tours will travel through the Historic District, highlighting the apartments, private homes, and commercial and civic buildings that distinguish Jackson Heights from other communities that developed between the two World Wars.
- Tickets should be reserved in advance. The tours will meet in front of Community Church, at the southwestern corner of 82nd Street and 35th Rain or shine; $10
- Community Church: 81-10 35th Avenue (35th Avenue between 81 and 82 Streets)
Take #7 Train to 82nd Street Station, then walk two blocks north to 35 Ave (church on left,) or E, F, M, R to Roosevelt Ave/Jackson Heights/74 Street and walk to 81 St and 35 Ave
